Tips on Preparing for Your Boudoir Shoot

In light of the fact that I just had a "Boudoir Day," I thought it was better late than never on posting some tips to prepare for your upcoming boudoir shoot.

The DOs:

  1. DO wear fake eyelashes.  There are many different styles, and I would recommend the most natural looking ones.  They will add to the overall effect of the photo, and look fantastic in a shot where you're looking down and the photographer zooms in on those long lashes.
  2. DO apply lots and lots of lotion!  The more moisturized your skin is, the more soft and glowing it will come across in your photos.  The camera does pick this up.
  3. DO treat yourself to a pretty piece of lingerie.  One piece that doesn't throw you over your budget, but will be that "something new and different" for your photos is always a great idea.
  4. DO bring a pretty pair of shoes to wear.  A pretty pair of high heels, wedges, stilettos, sexy boots...whatever!  A pretty pair of shoes that matches up well with the look you're going for in your photos makes the difference from a photo looking hot and NOT.
  5. DO trim up your nails and/or get a pedicure and a manicure.  Whatever "theme" or "look" you're going for, you want the overall look in the end to be polished.
  6. DO breathe...breathe...breathe.  I can't stress this enough to clients.  Sure, it's a little silly feeling and out-of-the-box uncomfortable when the shoot first begins, but try to RELAX.  From a photographer's point-of-view, the more comfortable you are, the hotter your photos will turn out.  This is the bottom line for me.  Most of my clients stay completely covered in lingerie for their sessions, but if you are feeling the flow and want to get a little risqué...go for it!  Always remember, boudoir photos are not about being nude.  They are sexy because they suggest nudity.

The DO NOTs:

  1. DO NOT apply fake self tanner prior to your shoot.  The orange effect it gives your skin will come across as really weird through the camera.  It will not achieve what you're wanting.  Trust me.  I realize that most people think that pasty white (like yours truly) is not sexy, but I think it is!  Nicole Kidman is one of the most beautiful women out there, and she is white as cotton.  Besides that, I soften up the skin in my boudoir sessions anyways, so you won't have to worry about your skin showing up blotchy or pasty looking.
  2. DO NOT go on a diet prior to your boudoir session.  If you are worried about your mid-section (who isn't?), try eating foods that will not bloat you.  I recommend low sugar fruits, vegetables, hardly any carbs or starches, and water.

In the end, the photographs might be going to someone else (like your husband, boyfriend, fiancé, whoever), but the actually session is for YOU.  The experience from beginning to end is about you and for you.  Try and enjoy the process, and when it's all over you will feel sexy, empowered, and brand new as a woman!  This is my experience and the experience of every.single.one of my clients!
